Accepting Payments: Tips for taking payments

Follow these tips to protect your revenue.

Updated over 2 weeks ago

When a client books you, you can choose to accept payment directly through Talo Payments or work with the client to arrange payment via another method โ€” whatever works best for your business.

No matter how you get paid, here are a few good practices to keep things smooth and stress-free:

  • Create a written contract before the job starts. Clear terms ensure you and your client both understand the exact scope of the job.

  • Keep copies of all payments and receipts. Even if you donโ€™t share them with your client, receipts are useful for tracking your expenses and preparing financial records later.

  • Consider requesting a deposit. If you do, make sure your deposit and refund policies are clearly spelled out and easy for clients to understand.

  • Stay in touch with the client throughout the job. Regular updates โ€” photos, messages, or quick check-ins โ€” help build trust and prevent misunderstandings.

  • Be clear about any extra costs early on. Transparency up front can help you avoid disputes once the work is underway.

  • If you're paid by check, wait for it to clear. This protects you from completing work before funds are confirmed.
