Marketing: How it works

How to adjust your preferences to ensure you receive the best leads for your business.

Updated over a month ago

We show customers your business, for free.

Every day, thousands of people use Talo to search for professionals who offer the services they need. Customers see real-time search results that display profiles, reviews, and other helpful details. They can narrow the list using filters to find pros who match exactly what they’re looking for.

You’ll start appearing in Talo search results once you complete two simple steps:

  1. Set up your profile and business info

  2. Set your targeting preferences so we know what types of jobs you want.

Tip: Learn how to rank at the top of search results and get the most leads.

Customers choose pros they like.

Your profile is your storefront — the better it looks, the more likely customers are to contact you. Strengthen your presence by:

  • Adding clear, useful information about your business

  • Uploading quality photos that show the kind of work you do

  • Getting reviews from previous customers

When a customer sees that you’re a good fit for their project, they’ll reach out to you — they’re actively searching and ready to hire. That means higher-quality leads, less wasted time, and more booked jobs.

You can learn more about how leads work.

A helpful tip: search for yourself on Talo to see what customers see. Compare your profile with other pros in your category to identify anything you can improve.

You choose your customers, too.

Your targeting preferences tell Talo exactly what kind of work you want, the areas you serve, and when you’re available.

Once these preferences are set, we’ll deliver direct leads — inquiries that match the choices you've made. Because these leads fit your preferences, they're automatically billed to your account.

Your business won’t appear in customer search results until targeting preferences are set, so it’s important to complete them early.

It's important to set your preferences because if they are wrong, you might hear back from and pay for leads that aren’t a good fit for your business.

Opportunities to meet more customers.

Beyond direct leads, you can also explore Opportunities in your Jobs tab. These are customers who match your general criteria but haven’t contacted you yet.

If you see a job that interests you, send a message. You’ll only be charged if the customer replies, and the cost is shown upfront.

Quick tip: Focus on your direct leads first (since those are auto-paid), and check Opportunities when you want to bring in extra work.

Respond quickly and get hired.

When a lead comes in and a customer starts a conversation, your response speed matters. Review their request and reply as soon as you can—fast communication significantly improves your chances of winning the job.

Tracking & analytics

Your dashboard includes analytics that help you understand how customers discover and engage with your business.

Here’s what each metric means:

  • Reach - How many customers could have seen your listing. Shows your potential audience size.

  • Impressions - How many customers actually saw your listing. Helps measure your visibility across Talo.

  • Views - How many customers opened your listing or profile. Indicates deeper interest beyond just seeing you in search.

  • Leads - How many customers expressed interest after viewing your listing. Includes direct inquiries that may turn into bookings.

  • Phone calls - How many customers tapped to call your business. Useful for measuring direct engagement and customer intent.

  • Link clicks - How many customers clicked your website or social media links from your listing. Helps you understand traffic driven to your external pages.

These metrics also display change percentages, showing growth or declines in performance so you can easily track improvements from week to week.
